Learn about Fresno's fascinating history of caring for the dead at our Voices from the Past Cemetery Tour on April 21! Get your tickets now at http://store.valleyhistory.org/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=171 According to Mountain View Cemetery scholar Gene Sibley, in April 1880, County Assessor William H. McKenzie, County Recorder A. M. Clark, and water company owners George McCollough and Lyman Andrews purchased eighty acres of land at the then northeast edge of town from the Bank of California. Today, that land is at the southwest corner of Tulare Ave. and First St. At least three cemeteries were developed on that property including the first county indigent cemetery at First St. and Huntington Blvd. In February 1884, Fresno experienced severe flooding, and the cemeteries were extensively damaged. There was public outrage, and a search for new cemetery property began. Two parties emerged with proposals for cemeteries in the area west of Fresno. Undertaker William Bennett proposed and started development on property near what is now Edison High School. The other was proposed by property and canal works developer Moses J. Church, pictured here, on land he had purchased in 1883 from Thomas Hughes. Wells were quite shallow in those days, as little as 10 feet deep, so Mr. Church and neighbors objected to Mr. Bennett’s cemetery location as it was immediately upstream from their properties. A public spat ensued and some minor vandalism occurred on the Bennett site. The dispute was resolved when Mr. Church agreed to deliver water to the Bennett property for development options other than a cemetery. In April 1885, Moses J. Church recorded a map of the Mountain View Cemetery subdivision which contained sixteen lots of nearly five acres each. The subdivision was located between Hughes, Belmont, West, and McKenzie Avenues. He immediately offered the lots for sale to religious, civic, and social organizations for minimal compensation, usually one to ten dollars, to be developed as cemeteries for their members. The first buyers were the Catholic Diocese, the County of Fresno, D. O. Kelly for St. James Church, as well as the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges.
